Romi Hefetz; Designer, Ceramicist
Long Island City, NY
I moved from Tel Aviv to New York in 1999 to pursue a product design degree at Parsons School of Design. While there, I was introduced to the ceramic slip-casting process. I fell in love with the material, the process, and with the endless possibilities it presented. I found that slip-casting uniquely straddles the boundary between hand-made and industrial production.
I worked as a product designer after graduation, but a year and a half of working in front of a computer made me realize that I missed working with my hands, so I rented a space at a communal ceramics studio. A few years later, in 2008, I decided to open Romi Ceramics where I design and hand make all of the pieces at my Long Island studio.
My designs have been exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair, Swedish House of Form in Hellefors, Sweden, Fellisimo Design House in NYC, The Third Israeli Ceramics Biennale in Tel Aviv, Israel and at the 4th Design Biennial Festival in Saint-Etienne, France.
